Richard Foreman, the author of the bestselling Raffles The Gentleman Thief books, blends the political intrigue of Robert Harris' series of Cicero novels with the action and adventure of Simon Scarrow in this sweeping historical epic.
Augustus Son of Rome tells the story of the assassination of Julius Caesar and the rise of his heir, Gaius Octavius, as he journeys to Rome from Apollonia. We see a boy grow into a man as Octavius develops the moral courage, intelligence and ruthlessness that will finally see him become Augustus, Emperor of Rome.
The pen and sword will be employed to defeat his enemies and Octavius will earn the name of "Caesar".
Yet Rome will exact its price - and triumph will be accompanied by tragedy.
Julius Caesar, Cicero, Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Brutus and Marcus Agrippa all feature in this epic adventure, which will appeal to fans of Shakespeare, Plutarch and Conn Iggulden alike.
'Augustus Son of Rome forges action and adventure with politics and philosophy. This superb story is drenched in both blood and wisdom - and puts Foreman on the map as the coming man of historical fiction'. (Saul David, Author of the Zulu Hart series)

I was able to pick up Augustus when it was free. It's 4,737 locations long, so not too short. The author clearly has some writing chops. I enjoyed his style, and especially found the soldiers to be engaging characters. The philosopher is really well done also. I really like having Cicero do some of his work through letters to Atticus.
The use of names irritated me a bit. Caesar really should be referred to as Caesar only, and never Julius. For similar reasons, Octavianus gets referred to as Gaius. As he and Caesar, after the adoption, are both a Gaius Julius, it could get confusing for the layman.
There is a lot of sex talk in the book, which I could live without. However, it's not raunchy if that would bother you.
The story covers just before the assassination of Caesar (hopefully that isn't a spoiler as it happened 2k years ago) and Octavianus on his way to claim his destiny.
It's not at the level of The First Man in Rome (and if you haven't read that series, order them now), but it is very good. Would recommend even at the current price of $2.99.

Augustus Son of Rome Richard Foreman 9781479224524 Books Reviews
Augustus Son of Rome is a fairly easy reading novel dealing with the life of Octavian Caesar (later "Augustus" Caesar) in his early life. The novel covers his youth up to the period shortly after the assassination of Julius Caesar. The novel does not cover the period in which Augustus in fact becomes First Citizen and de facto Emperor of Rome. No doubt a second novel is in the offing that will cover this period of the life of Augustus Caesar.
This novel features fairly good prose and is easy to read. I did occasionally find the use of flashbacks to be disorienting, but mostly not. The character development in this novel is adequate but somewhat flat. Oddly, I thought that the character of Marcus Agrippa was developed better than that of Octavian (the future Augustus).
Readers who have an interest in Roman history will likely enjoy this novel. RJB.
Augustus Son of RomeI have a master's degree in English linguistics from the University of Chicago, taught a legal writing course and practiced law for 25 years. Had I been given this book to read purely from a grammatical standpoint, it would have landed in the trash can. It's an insult to the reader to ask them to wade through dreck that has not been proofread. As others have noted, there is a "comma problem"-too many or too few- that renders some sentences unreadable. The author has verbal tics which most authors try to avoid. I know you can't expect a new Martin Amis for 99 cents, at least spellcheck, proofread and force the author at gunpoint if necessary to clean up the book. I also agree about the title of the book and the fact that it doesn't cover the period when Octavian named himself Augustus.
The writer keeps to his character and you can visualize the scenes and events that shape his life. A complicated yet simple story of how a boy is forced into manhood and will evolve into a greater ruler than the man who's death forced this path. Friendships forged in childhood along with his faith in Rome's legions helped turn a sickly youth into a determined avenger.
This story describes the twisted events leading to Caesar's violent death. The corrupt and self serving men responsible fatally underestimate Caesar's heir. Revenge he swore will be satisfied and legions will march to restore peace. Vivid details set scenes from bucolic countryside to the gates of Rome. The author leaves the story untold. If you don't know the history you are left in limbo as to what eventually happens. But it is still an enjoyable book.
I had such high hopes for this book, but it was a huge disappointment. The author has no sense of punctuation or grammar. The lack of comma usage was so awful that I had to reread certain sentences and try to figure out what the author was trying to write. It was a very tedious read. The book is titled Augustus, but throughout the story, he hasn't taken the name Augustus. I am familiar with this time period in history, and there were things (names of people) that had me confused. I can't imagine someone enjoying this book who has no idea who these characters are supposed to be. This book reads like a first draft. It's as if it never went through any editing process at all. I would definitely skip this one. I do not recommend this book at all.
Augustus Son of Rome is a fine story bringing one of the most transformative of characters of ancient times to life. Some structural changes would make it a better read. In looking over previous reviews a few mentioned a poor start. It does need a better hook. Fussing about the use of comma's and such is a waste of time after 27 years teaching English I've never encountered two teachers who could agree on their proper use. As long as the grammar checker doesn't put a green line under the sentence go on. Mixing religious symbols to me is a huge no-no. Adam and Eve don't fit within the Greco-Roman pantheon. You've alread been taken to task for sexual references (which are very mild, come on people check out the erotica stories for , you can hardly call what he's done pornography) don't get the War On Christmas crazies calling for your scalp.
One picky point, you do a fine job in the ambush, but, not wanting to spoil things, a killing blow in hand to hand combat with shields is for the femoral artery on the inside of the thigh, not the stomach. Kirk Douglas movie Spartacus the difference between a qucik kill and a slow kill.
I enjoyed the book and will read the previous ones by the author and his sequels.
